St. Mary's at 1115 Pearl St., Anderson, IN 46016 US - Special Liturgies

Special Liturgies

In addition to the thoughtful celebration of each season of the liturgical year, the following litugical celebrations have special significance for our parish:

  • Advent is celebrated as a preparation for Christmas.  A Jesse Tree is a part of the worship environment.  The tree has removable tags listing various gifts.  Parish members take a tag, buy the gift and place it under the tree.  These are given to the parish shut-ins and the needy in the community - local nursing homes, the Christian Center and the St. Vincent DePaul Society.
  • All Soul's Day - There is a Mass at the Parish Cemetary.
  • Our Lady of Guadalupe (Dec. 12) is a big parish celebration because of a large Latino population within the community.
  • Palm Sunday is celebrated by blessing palms and reading the first gospel at the St. John's Health System parking lot, followed with a one-mile procession through city streets to the parish church.  The liturgy is resumed inside the church with the Litugy of the Word.
  • Holy Thursday's Washing of the Feet involves the whole assembly.  The towels brought by the assembly are washed and donated to the local St. Vincent DePaul Society.
  • Good Friday's Adoration of the Cross uses a full-sized wooden cross.
  • Easter Vigil is celebrated with the assembly moving from a large outdoor fire, to the church to listen to the Old Testament readings, to celebrate the light service, the Liturgy of the Word, the Initiation Sacraments, and the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
